The Friends of the Woburn Public Library will present  “Howard Johnson’s—28 Flavors” on Thursday, May 1, at 7:00 pm.  The guest speaker will be Anthony Sammarco, the noted local historian and author.  He will present a slide lecture on his recent book, The History of Howard Johnson’s: How a Massachusetts Soda Fountain Became a Roadside Icon.

Howard Johnson created an orange-roofed empire of ice cream stands and restaurants that stretched from Maine to Florida and all the way to the West Coast.  Sammarco recounts how Howard Johnson introduced twenty-eight flavors of ice cream, clam strips, grilled frankfurters and a menu of foods that generations of families enjoyed when they traveled.

Sammarco is the author of over 60 books on the history of Boston and he lectures widely on the development of his native city.  He commenced writing in 1995 and his books have made the bestsellers list.  A teacher of history at the Urban College of Boston, Sammarco is the recipient of many awards. He is a fellow of the Massachusetts Historical Society and a member of the Boston Authors’ Club.

This event is free and open to the public.  Light refreshments will be served.  For more information, contact the Woburn Public Library at 781-933-0148 or visit the library’s website, www.woburnpubliclibrary.org.
